Did you know that Medicare GEP (General Enrollment Period) creates an SEP in to Part D with UHC?

January 1 – March 31 every year any Medicare eligible that has not activated Part B, has the opportunity to do so. The effective date of Part B will be July 1st and create a Guarantee Issue in to any carriers Medicare Supplement plan for 7/1. Keep in mind that they will receive a 10% penalty for every 12 month period they went without Part B coverage when they should have had it.

Most Seniors that have used GEP either needed to enroll in Part D during AEP of the prior year or enroll in to an MAPD plan 7/1 to have prescription coverage for the remainder of the year. I’m happy to share that I recently stumbled on to the following article on the AARP site which reads,

  • A general enrollment period (Jan. 1 to March 31 each year), if you missed your deadline for signing up for Medicare (Part A and/or Part B) during your IEP or an SEP. In this situation Medicare coverage will not begin until July 1 of the same year in which you enroll. You can sign up for a Part D drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan between April 1 and June 30 to begin receiving drug coverage under it on July 1.

Digging further in to the facts, I found that not all Part D carriers have this SEP available. When using this SEP the applicant can enroll with any UHC Part D plan as it is listed as one of the SEP’s on the Part D application.
